My Dad Got Bitten by a Strange Bug in Our House and We’re Terrified

Red Welts at the Kitchen Table

Dad came in from the garden, sweat still glistening on his forearms, and the kids crowded around the kitchen table, elbows up, eyes bright.

“What’s that on your arm?” I asked, pointing to the strange, raised bumps that were bright as fresh cherries.

He brushed a hand over them, a grin tightening his mouth. “Just a mosquito bite, honey.”

The kids leaned in, whispering, “Looks weird, Dad.”

“It’s nothing,” he said, chuckling, “just a little irritant. I’ll wash it later.”

I could feel the edge of his skin, the heat radiating from the welts, and a faint metallic scent of garden soil lingered in the air.

“You should put some ice on it,” Mom suggested, sliding a cold pack toward him.

Dad shrugged, “I’ll be fine.” The kids giggled, the tension easing for a moment, but the red marks stayed, stubborn as if they were warning us.

Nighttime Discovery in the Pantry

Later, the house settled into the low hum of the refrigerator and the distant chirp of crickets outside.

Mom opened the pantry door, reaching for a box of cereal, when a tiny, lifeless shape caught her eye on the floor.

She gasped, “What is that?” and lifted the creature—its elongated body, dark wings, a tiny “kiss”‑shaped mark on its back.

“It’s an assassin bug,” she whispered, voice trembling.

She snatched her phone, dialing the pest control service, her fingers shaking as she described the insect.

“Yes, we need someone out now. It’s a ‘kissing bug.’ It can carry a parasite—Chagas disease. The bite isn’t just a bite.”

The technician’s voice was calm but urgent. “Those bugs defecate near the bite. The parasite can enter through the skin or eyes. You need to get it checked, and we’ll treat your home immediately.”

Mom stared at the dead bug, the pantry lights flickering, the weight of the words sinking in.

“If it’s the parasite… we could be in real danger,” she said, the fear raw in her tone.

She looked up, eyes meeting mine, and the house seemed suddenly too small, too silent.

Mom opens the pantry to find a dead assassin bug, and the pest control technician warns that the bite could transmit a deadly parasite, leaving the family in sudden terror.
